Ribadu Charges Christian Leaders: ‘You Are Pillars of Peace, Security’ at 78th EYN Majelisa

Ribadu Charges Christian Leaders: ‘You Are Pillars of Peace, Security’ at 78th EYN Majelisa

The serene town of Kwarhi in Adamawa State came alive with spiritual fervor as over 2,000 pastors, delegates, and guests gathered for the 78th National Convention of the Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), also known as the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria.

In a powerful address delivered through his representative, Ambassador Kevin Peter, National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu delivered an impassioned charge to Christian leaders, urging them to rise as proactive architects of peace, unity, and justice in a nation grappling with multifaceted challenges.

Ribadu opened his address by celebrating EYN’s remarkable 102-year legacy, tracing its roots to its founding in 1923. He lauded the church’s holistic approach to ministry, which has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s social and developmental landscape.

“For over a century, EYN has embodied the essence of service to God and humanity,” Ribadu said, highlighting the church’s establishment of secular schools, hospitals, clinics, and agricultural programs.

These initiatives, he noted, have empowered communities, provided education to thousands, and improved healthcare access in underserved regions, particularly in Nigeria’s northeast.

“Your contributions are not merely commendable; they are transformative,” Ribadu emphasized, acknowledging EYN’s role in fostering self-reliance and hope. He singled out the church’s agricultural initiatives, which have bolstered food security, and its educational institutions, which have nurtured generations of leaders. This legacy, he argued, positions EYN as a vital partner in Nigeria’s quest for progress and stability.

Turning to the state of the nation, Ribadu painted a sobering picture of Nigeria’s challenges, describing the country as standing at a “critical juncture.” He acknowledged the nation’s abundant blessings—rich natural resources, diverse cultures, and a resilient population—but underscored the persistent threats of insecurity, violence, economic uncertainty, and social divisions fueled by ethnic and religious tensions. “These challenges test our resolve as a people,” he said, “but they also present an opportunity for the church to shine as a beacon of hope.”

Ribadu described Christian leaders as the “moral compass” of society and “torchbearers of righteousness.” He urged them to leverage their influence to guide Nigeria toward peace and cohesion, emphasizing that their role extends beyond the pulpit to shaping the nation’s moral and social fabric. “You are shepherds of God’s people,” he said, “and your voices carry the weight of divine authority and responsibility.”

In a direct appeal, Ribadu called on the church to remain steadfast in praying for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as the “Commander-in-Chief leading Nigeria through turbulent times.” He also extended his plea to include security agencies and decision-makers, noting that their efforts to safeguard the nation require spiritual and communal support. “Our security forces face immense challenges,” Ribadu said. “They need your encouragement, your prayers, and your cooperation to succeed.”

Rather than dwelling on government achievements in security and defense, Ribadu humbly requested the church’s continued partnership. He acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military and police, who often operate in perilous conditions, and stressed that a united front—combining government action with community support—would yield lasting results.

The heart of Ribadu’s address was a compelling charge to Christian leaders, outlining six critical roles they must embrace to foster peace and security in Nigeria. Delivered with clarity and conviction, these directives resonated deeply with the audience, sparking reflection and renewed commitment.

Preach the Gospel of Peace and Love
Ribadu invoked the teachings of Jesus Christ, the “Prince of Peace,” urging pastors to make their pulpits platforms for reconciliation and unity. Quoting Matthew 5:9—“Blessed are the peacemakers”—he called for sermons that emphasize love, respect, and harmony across Nigeria’s diverse tribes, faiths, and social strata. “Let your messages drown out the voices of division,” he said, encouraging leaders to model Christ’s compassion in their communities.

Encourage Interfaith Dialogue and Unity
Nigeria’s religious diversity, Ribadu argued, should be a source of strength rather than conflict. He urged Christian leaders to engage in open, respectful dialogue with Muslim counterparts and other faith groups, fostering mutual understanding. “Build bridges, not walls,” he said, citing successful interfaith initiatives as models for national cohesion. Such efforts, he noted, could transform Nigeria’s religious landscape into a tapestry of cooperation.

Ribadu emphasized that true peace is inseparable from justice. He challenged the church to speak boldly against corruption, oppression, and inequity, advocating for policies that uphold human rights and national security. “Your voice must be fearless yet constructive,” he said, urging leaders to hold public officials accountable while promoting governance that serves all Nigerians equitably.

Addressing the root causes of conflict, Ribadu highlighted poverty and marginalization as key drivers of unrest. He called on the church to expand its community development efforts, particularly in education, vocational training, and economic empowerment for youth and the underprivileged. “An empowered community is a peaceful community,” he said, praising EYN’s existing programs as a foundation to build upon.

Foster Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Nigeria’s history of conflict has left deep wounds, Ribadu acknowledged, urging the church to lead in healing and reconciliation. Quoting Romans 12:19—“Vengeance is mine, says the Lord”—he called for initiatives that promote forgiveness and restore broken communities. “Where there is forgiveness, peace blossoms,” he said, encouraging leaders to facilitate dialogue and healing in conflict-affected areas.

Ribadu reserved special praise for EYN President Rev. Dr. Daniel Y. Mbaya, congratulating him on the seamless conduct of his first synod in his current capacity. “Your leadership is a testament to God’s grace and wisdom,” Ribadu said, also acknowledging the church’s management team and all its leaders for their unwavering commitment. He expressed personal gratitude for the opportunity to address the convention, noting that the gathering’s spiritual energy was a powerful reminder of faith’s transformative potential.

As he concluded, Ribadu invoked Matthew 5:13–16, calling on the church to rise as “the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” “The task of building a peaceful and secure Nigeria is one we all share,” he said. “It demands intentionality, unity, and faith. Together, through prayers and decisive action, we can transform Nigeria into a land where peace, security, and godly coexistence reign supreme.”
