El-Rufai, Amaechi and the loose cannons of Nigeria’s politics

Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, two influential figures in Nigerian politics, have been making headlines with their bold comments and actions. Their unconventional approach has sparked debate about whether they’re reckless loose cannons or calculated strategists. As Nigeria navigates its intricate political landscape, El-Rufai, Amaechi, and other key players will undoubtedly influence the country’s future.

El-Rufai and Amaechi recent actions suggest opportunistic tendencies, raising important questions. With the government barely two years old, their intervention seems premature. Rather than a midterm review, their actions lack critical thinking and strategic analysis. As former governors and Federal Ministers, they are expected to offer a viable alternative solution and a roadmap to address Nigeria’s socioeconomic challenges.

It’s a paradox that El-Rufai and Amaechi personify the contradictions of the Nigerian state, a fact that speaks volumes about the country’s complexities. Take, for instance, as gentlemen of significant means, they can afford to engage research assistants, pay consultants, or even establish think tanks. That they have failed to do so is not only an injustice to the country but also diminishes their own standing. Even in the best of times – and we are clearly not in the best of times – critical thinking and in-depth analysis are essential for guiding and guarding any government. This is what seasoned players like the former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former Presidents Barack Obama of the United States of America and Nelson Mandela of South Africa,, among others, in many countries of the world, are doing.

Sadly, the state of our political discourse today is reflected in the petulance of El-Rufai and Amaechi. They exemplify a diminished polity where vituperation and divisive rhetoric have supplanted thoughtful analysis and in-depth evaluation. This is certainly unhelpful in view of the ongoing trade wars unleashed by the actions of President Donald Trump. The world is now in very turbulent waters and Nigerians have to navigate the unfolding drama. Scenario planning has to be done on the effects of what is going on beyond our shores and the Nigerian economy.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Anthony Enahoro, Maitama Sule and Aminu Kano provided insightful, dissenting views that enriched public discourse during their time. Unfortunately, today’s political landscape is marred by the petulant outbursts of the likes of El-Rufai and Amaechi, which have replaced thoughtful analysis with vitriolic attacks. This trend is particularly concerning amidst the global economic uncertainty sparked by President Donald Trump’s trade wars. As the world navigates these turbulent times, Nigeria must develop strategic plans to mitigate the impact of external factors on its economy. Unfortunately, El-Rufai and Amaechi’s self-indulgence is unhelpful and must be discouraged.

El-Rufai in particular has a history of making bold and sometimes divisive comments. For instance, his 2012 tweet threatened anyone who challenged the Fulani, an ethnic group, and his 2019 statement warned election observers who interfered with Nigeria’s election would be sent back in “body bags”, sparking outrage. Given his tendency to speak his mind, it’s surprising that El-Rufai accepted the president’s offer of a ministerial appointment. This raises questions about his true intentions: did he genuinely support Tinubu’s government, or would he have resigned if his nomination had been confirmed?

Amaechi’s candid admission that the fear of poverty motivated him to join politics after graduating in 1987, and has kept him in the game, offers a revealing insight into the drivers of those in power. This revelation is particularly concerning, as it underscores the deep-seated dysfunction within Nigeria’s political system. In reality, politics should be a vocation, not a career.

However, in Nigeria, politics has become a career path due to the country’s limited opportunities for economic advancement. This stunted political economy has led to a situation where individuals view politics as a means of personal gain rather than a calling to serve. Consequently, those who approach politics as a career often have limited expertise and a narrow perspective, which can hinder their effectiveness as administrators.

The first generation of politicians, including Awolowo, Bode Thomas, Fani Kayode, Drs. M.A. Majekodunmi, Omotayo Omitowoju and Michael I. Oparah, brought a unique perspective to politics, having established themselves in their respective professions before entering public service. This background was evident in their thoughtful approach and impactful contributions.

On the contrary, the 1966 coup marked a turning point, as many politicians returned to their pre-politics careers. Unfortunately, today’s political landscape is dominated by one-dimensional politicians lacking diverse career experiences and management expertise, with their policies and decisions twisting and turning like a barber’s chair, which is detrimental to Nigeria’s progress.

Life, as the saying goes, is a complex chemistry experiment, and humans are the lab rats, constantly seeking the right mix of ingredients for a stable and fulfilling existence. In this laboratory, the ruling elite act as master chemists, manipulating power, privilege and ideology to maintain their grip on the state. They use propaganda, repression and allied wrong channels or tactics to preserve the status quo. The tragedy of Nigerian politics lies in the fact their statements often come across as provocative and overly broad. This approach can be alienating and unhelpful in finding solutions to the country’s challenges. Furthermore, it has led a situation where most of those who claim to be leading us “misappropriate, misapply, mislead and misdirect the electorate”.

So, what’s the alternative chemistry of life? It’s a mixture of active citizenship and collective action. It’s a formula that recognizes the inherent value of every human being, regardless of his or her background, identity or socioeconomic status. It’s a chemistry that’s messy, unpredictable and sometimes explosive – but it’s also the only way to create a truly just and equitable society.

Well, a time like this demands advice for the Bola Tinubu-led administration. To foster growth, the government should consult widely with individuals outside its echo chamber. This approach is reminiscent of former US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s strategy during the New Deal era in the 1930s. When the New Deal wasn’t yielding the desired results, Roosevelt sought multiple lenses, bringing in contrarians and individuals with opposing views. Although their insights were sometimes disagreeable, they proved invaluable and refreshing.

A notable example of innovative policymaking is the establishment of the Small Businesses Administration, which inspired our own Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Interestingly, the idea for this game-changing initiative originated from a Letter to the Editor published in The Washington Post, written by an unknown lawyer from a small town. The letter highlighted the devastating impact of economic policies on small businesses nationwide. Recognizing the merit of the suggestions, the administration acted upon them, earning widespread acclaim and support for the government.

The Tinubu administration can draw valuable lessons from the experience of Konrad Adenauer, Germany’s post-war Chancellor. Adenauer’s approach of actively seeking out contrarian views helped shape Germany’s remarkable economic recovery after World War II and transformed the country into Europe’s largest and most stable economic success story. Similarly, the Tinubu administration would do well to avoid the pitfalls of groupthink and a variety of viewpoints, rather than risking “imprisonment in an echo chamber” that can stifle progress.

Effective time management and planning are also essential qualities of successful leaders. Again, Lee Kuan Yew’s ability to prioritize and implement policies drove Singapore’s success, while Mandela’s skillful time management enabled him to achieve great things despite adversity. In contrast, the failures of Saddam Hussein and Robert Mugabe to prioritize their countries’ needs and manage their time effectively led to widespread suffering and ultimately, their downfall.

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!

According to the women group, Naja’atu Muhammad should not be speaking against the National Security Adviser who has been able to use his office to relatively secure the north and its people from daredevil bandits and insurgents .

Najaatu in the video, claimed that during Ribadu’s tenure as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), he accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senators George Akume and Orji Uzor Kalu, of being among the most corrupt Governors in Nigeria.

The Kanawa Women Forum for Development in statement made available to journalists in Kaduna which claimed,Naja’atu is working for Atikui said,  “Though the National Security Adviser did  demand for a public apology and retraction from  Hajia Naja’atu Muhammad over the allegations she made in the viral TikTok video, we are giving her 7-day ultimatum to go back on same tiktok to apologize”.

The statement signed by the Leader of the group,Hajiya Amina Musa Lawan posited that he who must talk about equity must be ready to come with clean hands, thus part of reasons we are revealing her this her dark titled: “The ABC of Naja’atu the Saint” .

“During the reign of General Sani Abacha,Naja’atu distanced herself of progressive politicians and befriended the wife of the late dictator. She defended that regime in the face of the looting and the rights violations. She benefited financially and bought a lot of properties. At the time of the Abacha transitions,She contested the Senate seat for Kano central,As results were tricking in favour of Senator Kura Muhammad of blessed memory,Soldiers were ordered to invade collation center and Naja’atu was illegally declared the Winner, and it never lasted. That is why you will never hear her say anything about Abacha’s family or his looting.

“Naja’atu has a track record of blackmailing successive Kano state Governors in the last 25 years.During the Government of Shekarau,She brought in a Chinese Company to the Governor and demanded that billions of Naira contract should be awarded to her, when shekarau declined, she started campaign against him and ran away from kano.

America, The Country I Love, Dearly: Enmeshed In Mass Exodus Of Migrant Workers Against The Fabrics Of Its Own Spirit Of Liberty.

February 2nd, 2025

America, The Country I Love, Dearly: Enmeshed In Mass Exodus Of Migrant Workers Against The Fabrics Of Its Own Spirit Of Liberty.

By David Adenekan.

As a prelude to this brilliant article, please endeavor to listen to the 4 minutes 26 seconds amazing speech of Ronald Reagan (in an attached video clip to this article), former President of United States of America of blessed memory. I strongly hope it will forever resonate with many with common sense, that the greatness of America lies in the strength and talent of immigrants who continue to troop into the country from different parts of the world to add great values.

Suffice it to say, it is truly the mass inflow of migrants both through voluntary (mass inflow of Irish and Jewish populations; many people from third world countries through the diversity visa lottery called green card, refugees from many war torn countries, asylum seekers, illegal immigrants and others) and involuntary (millions of Africans trapped in the slavery system) that changed the course of the history of America to a country of immigrants, not the deadly invasion of Christopher Columbus that saw to the genocide (ethnic cleansing of the aborigines, American indians). This is truly against the erroneous claim that America was discovered by Christopher Columbus. It is simply so called another version of a “white supremacist” narrative that had for a long time permeated across the length and breadth of the country. Say it to the marines that America belongs to the invasionists from Western Europe led by Christopher Columbus. Let the truth be told.

The drive to remain free to enjoy the fruit of the land is the key that unlocks the many brains at work to make America the richest and greatest country in the world. It is imperative to say that more than 60% of the world billionaires have their wealth situated in the economy of United States, including many generations of Chinese Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, German Americans, Irish Americans, Russian Americans, African Americans and others. Is this not the strong reason why America will issue a threat to impose economic sanction on any country that dare to cross the line against its national interest? Did President Donald J Trump not recently threaten to impose 30% tariff on any goods from Columbia if the country refuses to allow the deported Columbia Immigrants to land in the country?

However, all of these political brouhaha will not change the fact of history that America is truly a country of immigrants.

For many Americans who have forgotten that the fabrics of our liberty as a people lies not in color, creed, race or ethnicity but in the foothold of freedom, human dignity and economic prosperity to respect and assimilate each others culture and value for a true nation building, they are just only been shortsighted not to read between the lines that America is indeed a land of the free to enjoy the liberty of the great wealth abound in the country. It is on this note, that the spirit of freedom that has spanned for centuries will not be negotiated or broken on a four year warranty tenure of President Donald J Trump.

Also, for many protagonists of President Donald Trump who are bent to subvert the will of freedom to re-write the history of God’s own country (America we love, dearly), buildeth by the sweat of immigrants, time will tell as power is transient.

Also, it is of a great note that from the ancient history of mankind, any country that closes its economic door to the advent of migrant workers coming with vigor, talents and wealth of knowledge to add great value to its economy will eventually decline in human capacity. This is coupled with the fact that such anti-immigrant policy will militate against the increase in its gross domestic products, GDP.

In the ancient days of the great Egyptian Empire, the mass exodus of the Jewish people from the Egyptian Empire in the days of the Great Pharaoh despoiled and turned the land to a place of desolate; and it eventually marked the end of Great Pharaoh Empire.

Again, power is transient and tell President Donald J Trump that his four years tenure of office will not be decisive enough to change both the course of history and conscience of America as a country of immigrants.

In summary, will President Donald J Trump change his family historical fact as second generation immigrants that migrated to United States of America from Germany (Patriarch) and Scotland (Matriarch)? Moreover, is Melania Trump, first lady not a migrant from Slovenia, Eastern Europe in 1996 (less than 30 years ago)?

Also, is President Donald J Trump or Melania Trump (first lady) not truly a metaphor shadow of America as a country of immigrants?

Lastly, Tell President Donald J Trump to be more discreet in his deportation of migrant workers. It is going to be counter productive because of its strong economic effects on productivity. Yes, this aren’t taking us no where in a technically recession economy.

Time will tell!

Group Blasts Elrufai for his Fraudulent, Destructive legacies…Passes vote of confidence on Uba Sani.

Group Blasts Elrufai for his Fraudulent, Destructive legacies…Passes vote of confidence on Uba Sani.

Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum (KPUF) has blasted former Governor ,Mal. Nasir Elrufai over his fraudulent and destructive legacies that left Kaduna an indebted State.

The Forum, which Passed Vote of Confidence on his successor, said Elrufai has no moral right to accuse Governor Uba Sani for working closely with President to enjoy Federal government support to provide adequate security and development in the State .

El-Rufai had launched a scathing attack on his successor, Uba Sani, accusing him of sycophancy and pandering to President Bola Tinubu for self aggrandizement.

The criticism followed Governor Uba Sani’s remarks during a TVC News interview on Monday, where the governor expressed surprise at the growing criticism of Tinubu’s administration from some founding members of the All Progressives Congress.

But in a swift reaction, the Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum in a statement rose in defence of the Governor on account of his civil approach to governance and his cordial and visionary leadership style that gave birth to a peaceful and relatively secured Kaduna today.

According to group, the huge debt left by Elrufai’s administration is part of reasons ,the Governor is facing difficulty in efforts to raise funds for development and working round the clock to ensure gaps of harsh economy are closed .

The Statement signed by the Chairman of the Forum,Dr. David Bege Abraham, explained,”There is no where in the world where frictions with superior leaders such as a President can yield growth and development. This is part of reasons, Governor Uba Sani’s support is apt and right in our view.

While Stating that Elrufai’s recent comments on Uba Sani are unwarranted , especially that the governor didn’t abuse of destroy his image on the live TV programme.

The statement further reads: “We can all testify to the commitments of the Governor to provide security that today has created enabling environment for the citizens, residents and business people.

“This was the case in days of Mal Nasir Elrufai. We can argue the fact he supported the Governor to win ,but he should allow him to govern the State with interference and distractions.”

” When Elrufai accused the APC of poor leadership and encouraged the opposition parties to form a united front ahead of the 2027 election, What Governor Uba Sani did was only to gave an insight to why they are aggrieved and nothing else .

“What we want in Kaduna now is peace and unity and not political fights. Anything short of this would be resisted by the good citizens of the state

NNPCL: Northern Elders Groups Root for Bala Wunti as New NNPCL Boss

NNPCL: Northern Elders Groups Root for Bala Wunti as New NNPCL Boss

Coalition of Northern Elders across the three geopolitical zones today called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint the Chief Health, Safety and Environment Officer Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Dr. Bala Wunti to succeed Engr. Mele Kyari, the outgoing Group Chief Executive Officer of the country’s oil company.

“We strongly believe if Wunti from Bauchi State is appointed, the erroneous impressions about the lopsided appointments would disappear because the Northerners would celebrate the feat”. They said .

The elders, who made the appeal in a statement made available to journalist in Kaduna explained,”The decision to speak as elders is to douse tension and tell the President that north deserve rewards in form of appointments for the overwhelming support he enjoyed during the 2023 general elections.

The statement signed by Chairman of Coalition,Prof. Inuwa Wada Mohammed further stated:”We have carefully studied all Northerners within the oil and gas sector, and resolve to support Bala Wunti, a thoroughbred oil and gas industry professional with 30 years’ experience covering Technical, Commercial, Managerial and Executive roles across the oil and gas value chain.

“Mele Kyari-led team, alongside Bala Wunti and others, has its name written in gold in the history of the Nigerian oil sector despite challenges and distractions within and outside the sector, therefore the President as head of Nigeria’s apex oil company has the power to decide on who takes over from Kyari.
